Eligibility criteria for DFID scheme

The GPC is a free service for diagnosing plant diseases and giving advice and solutions to disease problems. The Clinic is supported by the UK Department For International Development (DFID) enabling us to provide the FREE service to eligible groups in DFID selected countries. DFID have a policy of helping to alleviate world poverty through the creation of sustainable livelihoods and the promotion of human development and conservation of the environment. The service is for people working in agriculture, forestry and other areas of natural resources where plants are important. GPC customers include:
    • Agronomists
    • Boards representing production of a key crop
    • Foresters
    • Grower Organisations, Co-operatives
    • NGOs and Development workers
    • People working for non-governmental organisations
    • Researchers
This is not an exclusive list but note that the emphasis is on publicly-funded organisations. If you think that you may be eligible for DFID funding, please give your details to us by completing the user login form, allowing us to assess your eligibility. Alternatively click here and ask for a DFID questionnaire form. We will contact you if there is doubt about your eligibility for the waiving of charges.

Numbers of samples accepted

The time taken to complete a diagnosis can vary considerably. It is difficult to state precisely how many samples or queries we are able to accept from individuals. As a general guide, we may accept up to 10 specimens/cultures from any one enquirer relating to a particular disease problem. Subsequent samples of the same disease (from the same location) would have to be assessed for eligibility.

We may be able to provide more support in particular cases. We encourage potential users to discuss their needs with us in advance. Our aim is to be flexible and responsive.

If there is a particular and extended need to diagnose disease problems, for example in survey work, DFID expect such work to be supported directly by the project. The free service is not available for lengthy investigations of disease problems.
